Innovation Under Glass: How Technology Is Shaping the Future of Fresh Produce
At Red Sun Farms, "Innovation" isn't just a trend, it’s a standard that ensures our Seed to Plate promise remains unbroken, under glass 12 months of the year. For our consumers and retail partners, technology helps us consistently achieve flavor, innovation, safety, and sustainability.
The Science of the Spectrum
The most significant shift in modern greenhouse production is the introduction of lit crops. By utilizing advanced LED systems that can modulate the full spectrum of natural light, we optimized our growing environment when natural light levels are low. These technologies have helped extend the growing season, ensuring that customers have fresh greenhouse tomatoes, peppers, & cucumbers all year long.
Resource Circularity: High-tech Greenhouses utilize less water
Many modern greenhouses in North America have advanced water circulation systems and can recycle unused water and fertilizers.
Plants are continuously fed a precise amount of water and nutrients through thin plastic tubes. (The tubes and steaks are called drippers and emitters.) These tubes connect directly to the growing medium. Any unused water is fed back into a circulation system, sterilized and re-used. This method ensures water is consumed efficiently
Water is also used for temperature regulation. On cool days, water is heated and pumped through metal rails that run along the rows of the greenhouse. This is an energy efficient way to keep the greenhouse warm. These metal rails also serve a dual purpose as scissor carts run along this system for crop care and scouting.
Biological Integrity and Automation
We employ Integrated Pest Management (IPM), using beneficial "good bugs" to manage unwanted pests. Our Greenhouses have also invested in autonomous harvesting.
By controlling every variable, from the initial seed selection to plate, Red Sun Farms is growing a more consistent quality and flavorful food future that is. Grown with purpose, powered by technology.
